Aimed at Players in County Age Group Cricket or our Middlesex Schools Cricket U13-18, Emerging Play Programmes and County Academies. These sessions are wholly focussed on: Fielding, Spin Bowling, Pace Bowling, Bating. In these sessions we will look at the player and what key elements of technique will allow the player to perform more regularly.

Fielding Academy

  • The Fielding Academy will work on various aspects of fielding from White ball skills to Red Ball skills, looking into having players specialising in positions on the field. Initially players will be working through the various distances of fielding: Close Catching (In Front and Behind of Square), The Ring (Saving the Single) and Boundary Work.

  • The modern fielder needs athletic solutions to be able to release the ball faster having stopped the ball, understand their leadership role in managing the fielding unit on their side of the pitch. Taking methods from Baseball we explore Various arm slots to reduce the time taken to release the ball whilst being on the move, develop better acceleration mechanics from our Split Step position, then develop the ability to dive (To stop or catch) and land safely to adjust into a throwing position if required.

  • We shall add visual cues to help the fielders gauge are they defending their space or preparing to attack the ball.

  • Close catching skills such as fielding in the slips, gully, short leg, silly point will be practiced (Age Relevance applies).

  • Players should walk away being a Wicket Taking threat in the field for their respective sides.

Batting Academy

  • Batters will be working on developing key fundamentals that allow them to strike the ball with more power regularly using the ‘Negative movement’ and unweighting of the bat. Batters will explore their stance, their triggers (If they are required what is and ensuring we do not lose balance as a result moving from one balanced position to another), timing of the movements, mindset, developing game plans for facing a variety of spinners, game plans against the new ball pace bowlers and older balls.

  • Batters would look at their bat paths and how they can strike the ball more often, using their wrists for power and/or placement. Players will be looking to hit the ball later, exploring low vs high risk options in scenarios then discussing their options that they used and alternative options they might wish to explore to use next time.

  • Power Hitting with Strength and Conditioning will be taught taking methods from baseball, ball exit speeds would be recorded, this is supported with Power Hitting specific workshops with our resident Baseball Coach. We will develop wrist work with the use of Hurling Sticks and other tools.

  • We want to develop the mindset and skillset to score off a bowlers better delivery, the higher the level of cricket; the more better deliveries are faced and we need low risk options to keep scoring, then look into how to prepare to score large hundreds and construct them.

Spin Bowling Academy

  • The Spin Bowling Academy will look into the finer points of Spin Bowling mechanics and how this varies to the individual, run up speed, backfoot impact (Alignment of the body), Arm paths of the arms, Front foot Impact (Exploring different alignments of feet which are determined by their movement preferences and dominant muscle chains), Release of the ball and the follow through with tips on how to self-analyse their action. We shall look into their grip (Each ball has different seams), how the fingers/wrist are used to impart spin, how the different directions of spin affect the trajectory and movement off the pitch (Lateral Spin, Barrell/Side Spin, Over Spin, Back Spin).

  • We shall go into how to bowl variations, record the actions and aim to best disguise the variations: Carom Ball, Top Spinner, Flipper/Back Spinner, Undercutter, Floater, Armed Ball, Changes of Pace, Googly etc.

  • The bowlers will go into scenarios and challenges to put some pressure onto their delivery of the ball, develop a plan for an over, how to get into a spell of bowling, plan their spell by setting the appropriate fields to the plan, learning how to adapt the plans to create doubts or wicket taking opportunities, learning how to control the strike of the batters or reduce the run rate. Learning how to feel their delivery and understand why the ball is going flatter/loopier/to the off side/to the leg side of target.

Pace Bowling Academy

  • The Pace Bowling Academy will look into the various phases of the action and develop the Strength and Conditioning to support them during each phase. We shall look into the Running Mechanics of the bowler.

  • We aim to have a long jump rather than high jump and spend less time on the back foot when we land (Ideally without striking the heel which acts as an anchor, the distance between the back and front foot would be about 70% of your height which is not easy to do if your backfoot anchors) by training the body to start to stiffen the ankle and knee. Back foot impact alignment (Side on, Semi Open or Chest on which is all determined by their movement preferences and dominant muscle chains), Front foot impact (What is our alignment and arm path at this stage, how will this affect our release of the ball), Release of the ball (Is it directed to target and how do we adjust the grip to be able to move the ball based on your release angle. The Follow through towards target completing the action.
